1. Comcast and Time Warner Merger Falls Apart [Huffington Post]
The reported $45.2 Billion merger of Comcast with Time Warner Cable fell apart this week. It happened shortly after lawyers from Justice Department and the Federal Communication Commination publically said they would oppose the deal.
2. Google Launches Wireless Phone Service [Wired]
Google is officially in the wireless phone service business. This week, the search engine company launched Project Fi, a new wireless carrier service that “automatically moves phones between traditional cellular networks and the Wi-Fi networks inside homes and businesses.” Another noticeable feature is the price of the new service. There is a $20 dollar base fee with a $10 dollar charge per gig of data used. If a customer does not used all their data, they are credited back the difference.
3. Amazon Takes a Loss but Still Beats Earnings Reports [USA Today]
Despite Amazon's revenues rising 15% reaching $22.72 Billion, the e-commerce company reported a net loss of $57 million. It wasn't all bad news however. Amazon's revenue was higher than expected, set at $22.39 Billion earlier by industry analysts. The earnings report also showed an impressive $1.6 billion in net sales for Amazon’s growing cloud computing service.
4. Tidal’s New Music Streaming App Falls off the App Stores Charts [BGR]
Only after three weeks, Jay-Z’s new music streaming service has been called a failure by many industry insiders. Peaking on the U.S. iPhone top 20 download chart shortly after its official launch, this week Tidals music streaming app has fallen out of the top 700 hundred. To add insult to injury, the same week both Pandora’s and Spotify’s app made history by being the first two music streaming apps to occupy positions in the top 5 chart at the same time.
5. Apple Watch Ships Today [USA Today]
Apple Watch has officially shipped its first batch of Apple Watches to the earliest pre-orders. Apple watch models, which sold close to a million units on its first day, range in price from $350 to $17,000. Apple is currently selling its new watch via their online store. If you purchase a watch today you can expect it to arrive at your door by June.
