The iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy 3 have been dubbed by CNET as the all-around top two smartphones on the market right now.
Each have their ups and downs — but which one deserves to be named: The BestSmartphone for Professionals?
Naturally, we asked some of CyberCoders’ behind-the-scenes technology nuts. Turns out, the CyberCoders Director of Engineering Shane Andrade says Apple’s iPhone 5 is the best phone out there (spoken like a true member of the Cult of Mac!). On the other hand, our Director of IT Justin Stumpf sees way more value in the Android operating system in the Samsung Galaxy3.
They went head-to-head to convince us why their favorite phone is the best for work! Who do you agree with—Shane, the Apple-fanboy or Justin, the Android advocate?
So, tell us, why is the iPhone 5 awesome for professionals?
Speed! The LTE network and improved processor let you get more work done faster and more efficiently. What are some cool workplace apps and features for the iPhone 5?
When it comes to organization, Evernote is a great app to manage notes, to-do lists, photos and more — perfect for the professional on the go. Another app exclusive to the iPhone isPages. It’s like Word on the go! It’s perfect for any professional who doesn’t have access to their laptop but still needs to create professional-looking documents.
Why is the iPhone5 better than its competitors?
Think of it as you would a suit you might wear to work. Do you go for last season’s look at a discounted price or pay the premium for the newest trends? The iPhone 5 shows you are cutting edge and in touch with the latest and greatest technologies.
How easy is it to sync to other devices (e.g. iPad, MacBook)?
While you can’t sync directly from device to device, you can wirelessly sync from any Mac or PC with iTunes automatically once the device is in the range of the computer. So if you have your iPhone and your iPad set to wirelessly sync, you could do it that way.
That’s cool. I have to ask— it’s so much more expensive! How do you justify the cost?
The quality. It can handle any type of workplace not just office jobs. With a metal backing and bezel, it can handle some of the roughest workplaces without fear of damage unlike many other phones which are mostly plastic.
Any last words on the iPhone 5?
The iPhone 5 is a definite upgrade from the iPhone 4 with faster speeds and larger screen without being awkwardly large like some of the competitors. It is the perfect compromise of size, speed and convenience.
Why is the Samsung Galaxy 3 awesome for professionals? It offers flexibility with productivity apps, including your choice of email clients or mobile office applications. And it natively supports flash for web browsing — all at a much lower price than the iPhone.
And what makes it knock competitors out of the park?
It’s light, comes with a superior camera, communicates with other Galaxy S 3 phones wirelessly, 4G LTE standard and includes Dual Core Processors, also standard.
It’s half the price of an iPhone 5, incredibly strong and scratch resistant screen and has the ability to be a mobile hotspot for other devices. Need 4G Internet while on the road? No problem!
What are some cool workplace apps and features for the Samsung Galaxy 3?
Moxier Email is a more advanced mail client than what typically ships with an Android phone.Google Maps is another. Mobile professionals can benefit by quickly searching for food, lodging, events, businesses and navigating to the destination with the built in GPS navigation.
Alternative keyboards like SwiftKey actively learn how you type and what words you are most likely going to say next, this dramatically reduces email response and document editing time.
That’s great for working via smartphone. So what if I want to sync data to other devices?
This may be the one where Apple wins. It is not super easy to sync with a PC. Wireless providers each have their own free app for this. Verizon’s is pretty easy to use, but not as integrated as iTunes is.
Any last words?
I’d also like to note that both the Android and the iPhone platforms offer remote desktop and VPN capabilities. For any professional this can be the key reason to upgrade to a smartphone.
