There are several positive signs that indicate your job interview went well, like a great connection with the interviewer or being immediately introduced to potential team members.

But what about bad signs? Are there interview signs you didn’t get the job?

1.     Radio Silence

Perhaps one of the strongest interview signs you didn’t get the job is when you hear nothing from the recruiter or prospective employer.  Not only are they not reaching out, but they are not responding to your follow-up messages or communications.

2.     The interview was cut short

If you get the feeling that your interviewer was trying to rush through his or her questions, and the interview stopped well short of the time allotted, it is more likely than not that the interviewer already decided you were not the right candidate for the job.

3.     They did not explain the next steps

If a hiring manager or interviewer thinks the interview went well, he or she will likely explain the next steps in the interview process to you or even set a follow-up interview on the spot.  If you receive no details on what happens next, and the interviewer does not directly answer questions about those next steps, you probably did not get the job.

4.     Still accepting applications

Did the interviewer mention the company is still accepting applications for the position? Is the job still posted, or worse, was it re-posted? If so, it may mean they have not found the right candidate that fits their needs.

5.     Compensation expectations do not match

Interviewers will often ask a candidate what their compensation expectations are. If you find that your compensation expectations are much higher than the company is willing to offer, it’s a sign you didn't get the job after the interview.

6.     Did not connect with the interviewer

There are times when you will walk out of a job interview feeling you connected well with the person interviewing you. There are also times when you will feel you could just not connect with the interviewer on any level. If you cannot connect with the interviewer, you are facing an uphill battle on the path to getting hired.

7.      You felt under-prepared

If you felt you were underprepared for the job interview and could not properly respond to the questions you were asked, the recruiter may have gotten the impression you did not qualify for the role and will likely go with another candidate. If this happens, do not ask yourself: did I get the job? Instead ask yourself: how can I better prepare for the next job interview.

8.     No follow-up questions

If you think back on your interview and realize that the hiring manager did not ask any follow-up questions, that is a bad sign. The lack of interest usually means they do not feel you are a suitable candidate for the role and so there is no point in digging further.
