At the height of the pandemic, many workers had their jobs furloughed and job offers put on hold. They were left in a position of uncertainty; unsure whether they would be re-called to work or told they no longer had a position at the company.
This is not a problem specific to pandemics. It can occur at any time, and if you are not prepared, you will not know what to do.
Here are five tips to follow if you find your job offer is on hold.
1. Seek Clarification
One of the first things you need to do when your job offer is on hold is seek clarification as to whether your job offer is really on hold, or if the company has already decided that it will not move forward with any hiring for that role. Knowing for sure will help you decide what steps you need to take. If the job offer has truly been placed on hold, do not be afraid to ask if the company has an expected timeline for when you would start.
2. Remain Positive
Being in a position of uncertainty is nerve-wracking. It is hard to move on and make decisions while waiting for other people to make up their minds. While you are stuck in this difficult time, remember to remain positive and be patient. While that is understandably very difficult, it will protect your mental health and keep you from making rash decisions.
3. Improve Yourself
While your job offer is on hold, and you are waiting, this is a great time to focus on improving yourself. In this case, improving yourself does not mean hitting the gym and eating healthier (although that is good too). Rather, take this time to improve your skills. That way, if you do return, you will be better suited to your job and stand out. And if you end up having to go elsewhere, you will be better able to market yourself.
4. Research Opportunities
While Scar may not be the best role model, his advice to “Be Prepared” is a mantra that should be universally adopted. While your job offer is on hold, you should not hesitate to see what other opportunities are available. Keep searching for job offers, applying for other positions, and attending interviews. This way, you have alternative options available in case the initial offer falls through or takes an extended time to materialize.
5. Communicate Commitment
It can be really difficult to deal with the prospect of losing a job you really love and were excited about. If your job offer is on hold, and you truly want to work for the company your offer is with, express that to your potential employer. While it will not guarantee you a position, employers ultimately want employees that truly want to work for them. Making that known may help your chances.
