It is easy to lose track of time. We have all experienced it. Sometimes it happens because we are too engrossed in a deep conversation with an old friend. Other times it happens because we have hit “Next Episode” one too many times on a binge-worthy Netflix series.
And while no one is completely immune from a skewed perception of time, there are those who are more vulnerable to it – suffering from a condition called “time blindness.”
What is Time Blindness?
Time blindness is a cognitive challenge that affects a person’s ability to accurately perceive and manage time. Or put much more simply, time blindness is the inability to recognize when time has passed or estimate how long something will take. As a result, people who suffer from time blindness are often bad planners, disorganized, and unpunctual.
Who Suffers from Time Blindness?
Time blindness is not a new concept. Nor is it a standalone disorder. For many years, time blindness was most often closely associated as a symptom of Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). But time blindness is gaining greater recognition (and becoming TikTok famous), and psychologists and researchers are delving deeper into the complexities of cognitive functioning. Now we know that time blindness and ADHD are not always concurrent. In fact, there are many different groups of individuals who can experience time blindness, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), neurological conditions, or simply those burdened with high levels of anxiety and stress.
What Factors Contribute to Time Blindness?
As discussed above, time blindness is not a standalone disorder and is often associated with various medical conditions. But beyond medical conditions, there are also plenty of other factors in everyday life that can cause members of the general population to suffer time blindness.
These factors include depression, stress, anxiety, fast-paced lifestyles, and too many technological distractions.
How Can Time Blindness Affect Your Work?
Not surprisingly, punctuality and time management are critical components of any job. And so, it is not hard to see how someone who suffers from time blindness could become so immersed in tasks that others are left unfinished. Time blindness could also manifest at work by causing individuals to improperly calculate deadlines for critical projects. Or simpler yet, time blindness can make it so that you are late for work or even staying too late at work as you become hyper focused on projects.
How to Fight Time Blindness?
Fighting time blindness may require a combination of strategies to address underlying factors and improve time management skills.
Here are several practical tips to help combat time blindness:
